Wednesday at Wilmot (W@W), an outreach program of Wilmot United Church, is open to anyone in need of encouragement and assistance. There are no requirements to prove low income or to attend church and there are no religious aspects to the program. Everyone who attends is valued and all receive a warm welcome in a supportive environment. W@W is volunteer-led with support from Wilmot United Church, other churches and the wider community. There are more than 50 volunteers involved with the many aspects of W@W. Times and Dates Doors open at the King Street entrance at 12 noon every Wednesday from September to mid-June. W@W is not open from mid-June till early September. Most guests stay about an hour. There is usually a line-up to get in, so people often arrive early. Grocery gift cards are generally given out on the first and third Wednesdays of the month to those who are eligible (it must be two months since receiving a gift card). Grocery gift cards and fresh food bags are only available in person and before 1 pm. There are limited amounts, so they are given on a first-come, first-served basis. Cancellation Policy If schools in Anglophone South West are cancelled, W@W will also be cancelled. What happens at Wednesday at Wilmot? For more than 10 years, Wednesday at Wilmot has provided a nutritious lunch, free haircuts and bus tickets, advice and services from nursing and law students, personal care items, used clothing, and food staples such as cereal, pasta, and canned goods. Once every two months individuals and families are eligible to receive grocery gift cards valued from $15 - $40 depending on family size. Twice a month, bags of fresh foods, including milk, bread, cheese, eggs, fruits and vegetables, are available on a first-come, first-served basis (thanks to a generous grant from the Windsor Foundation). Sincere thanks to W@W supporters and funders! The congregation of Wilmot United Church, through donations to the Benevolent Fund, provision of space, volunteers, and steadfast commitment to warmly welcome and assist those in need, is the principal supporter of Wednesday at Wilmot. Wilmot’s United Church Women’s group has been a tremendous support. Since 2017, the Fredericton Co-op Community Fund has provided funds to supplement costs of lunches, non-perishable food, haircuts and bus tickets. Their support has enabled W@W to assist between 40 to 90 people in need for 40 weeks per year for the last seven years! In 2023, The Windsor Foundation generously funded the cost of fresh food bags for 80 W@W guests each month. Victory Meat Market has been a supporter of W@W since its inception. With its convenient downtown location for W@W guests to purchase food with gift cards, plus its generosity and kindness to those less fortunate, Victory remains an essential partner to W@W. The City of Fredericton’s Transit Assistance Program has helped out for many years by providing a generous number of bus tickets to be distributed by W@W. Bus tickets are so very important to enable health-related appointments, grocery shopping, job interviews, family visits and so much more. St. Dunstan’s Catholic Church has been a great supporter of W@W programs for several years. Generous donations have also been received from Holy Family-St. Kateri Tekakwitha Parish and Forest Hill United Church. Individuals from New Brunswick to British Columbia have directed financial donations to W@W. There have also been bequests made to the Benevolent Fund in memory of members of Wilmot United Church and others. In the past, W@W has also received financial assistance from The Fredericton Community Foundation, the United Way, Second Harvest Food Rescue, and Dept of Agriculture, Government of Canada. Thank you all, so very much! To learn more or to get involved, please contact Rita Roach . More ministries .

Russ Daye Russ has been a minister for more than thirty years, and served churches in Toronto, Halifax, Quebec’s Eastern Townships, and outport Newfoundland. He has also taught at three theological colleges and worked on truth and reconciliation processes in Canada, South Africa, and Fiji, where he was UCC overseas personnel for several years. Much of his ministry has been shaped by what you might call 'intersectionality' - the points of connection between the mainline church and other kinds of communities: Indigenous communities; Muslim and Buddhist communities; communities of refugees in the Middle East; and racialized communities. He has published two books, one on reconciliation in South Africa, and one entitled Turning Ourselves Inside Out: Thriving Christian Communities, which he co-authored with Dr. Robert Fennell of the Atlantic School of Theology after they spent five years researching churches in Canada and the US that found a way to revitalize after a period of decline. Russ and his partner, Virginia, enjoy adventure travel and outdoor sports and hope that they will keep them fit enough to keep up with their growing and very energetic clan of children and grandchildren.
